Abstract
Background: Elderly subjects who have received long-term care services are at high risk of pressure ulcers. Therefore, this study was carried out to identify histories of pressure ulcers and to evaluation the risk of pressure ulcers using the Braden scale.

Method: One hundred three subjects who received visiting nurse services from a university hospital in Gyeong-ju or were admitted to nursing homes in Po-hang between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2010, were enrolled for this study. Assessment tools included demographic factors, the grade of care, activities of daily living (ADL), presence of pressure ulcer, previous histories of pressure ulcers and the Braden scale scores.

Results: Twenty-six subjects (25.2%) had previous histories of pressure ulcers. The mean Braden scale score was 15.02¡¾4.23(Range, 6¡23). As categorized into 2 groups based on histories of the pressure ulcers, the mean score was 11.92¡¾3.59 in group with the histories of pressure ulcers and 16.06¡¾3.93 in that without it(P<0.001). Subjects had the risk of pressure ulcers by the Braden scale were 71(69.9%). The Braden scale had a positive correlation with the grade of care (P<0.001) and a negative correlation with ADL (P<0.001). The factors related to histories of pressure ulcer were home care service (P=0.010), concurrent diabetes (P=0.023) and a low score of the Braden Scale (P=0.028).

Conclusion: The pressure ulcer risk assessment scale is recommended for the evaluation of elderly subjects receiving long-term care services."
